Almost Done!

The Joseph's Guild was back in action yesterday.  They came prepared with drills, anchors, and screws!  Their main job was to hang the projector, projector screen, speakers, bulletin board, and some pictures.  It's been cool to see people of all ages work in this room and "refresh" it for a new generation!

My favorite part in the room is the "Memory Wall."  The wall literally highlights giant pictures from previous FLY retreats and trips!  It's a powerful reminder to me of how God has moved and is moving in teens' lives!  These FLY events have allowed youth to experience and grow in God's love.  The Memory Wall is a testament to these memories and memories to come...

This Sunday, Sr. FLY will be moving furniture back into Room 201.  There will be a lesson on Chapter 22 of "The Story" which is "The Birth of the King."  It's sort of fitting that the Christmas story will be the first lesson in the refreshed room... :)

On Sunday, March 3rd, there will be a brief "re-dedication service" at 10:10am in Room 201.  Everyone is invited to come and sign a special painting which will hang in the room.

The room is almost done...

New Tiles

Originally, we had a painting party scheduled for Feb. 8, but the event had to be cancelled because of a huge blizzard.  So we moved the painting party to Feb. 15 and some people came to paint new ceiling tiles... all 93 tiles!  The one evening job became a two-day job as the crew came back the next day to finish.  Some tiles, like the blue & green ones, needed second and third coats of paint.  The tile colors were chosen by an interior designer, which won youth approval last summer!  The painting crew did a fantastic job - as they rocked out to Gangnam Style and Frank Sinatra!

Lights!

This past week, Mike the electrician installed new light fixtures and they look AWESOME!  They are all energy-efficient LED lights and are controlled by dimmer switches.  A total of 12 pendant lights are spread throughout the room.  Two track lights with 4 spots each are on the east and west walls.  The new "front" of the room will be the east wall, instead of the north wall.  The track lights are flexible enough to highlight artwork, pictures, presenters, and musicians.

Next Friday (Feb. 15), youth are welcome to come paint new ceiling tiles for the room!  These tiles will hang together in "pods" throughout the room.  The exposed ceiling will be seen in between these pods.

Once the new tiles are placed in the ceiling, there will be two major jobs left: hanging items (speakers, artwork & pictures) and moving the furniture back in!  The project is on schedule and should be complete by the end of this month!

Painting!

The church smells like paint!  Today, the painting crew sprayed the first coat of black on the ceiling.  They plan on spraying the second coat tomorrow.  The same crew will also paint the walls; so the paint fumes will be lingering for awhile around church!  The ceiling looks exactly like we had hoped!  It's definitely black!  Check out some dark pics below...

Joseph's Guild & Contractors

This week has been a busy one in the Sr. FLY Room!  On Monday, the Joseph's Guild (an amazing volunteer group that keeps the church looking sharp) removed the lights, speakers, and HVAC insulation.  It was literally a dark and itchy job!  Thank you Joseph's Guild for all of your hardwork in the room!

Today, contractors began working on the HVAC ductwork and installing new lights.  Kurt Finkbeiner has been instrumental in finding and hiring all of these contractors!  Thank you, Kurt!  I'm excited that the new lights will be on dimmers... so yes, we'll have "mood lighting" in the new room!  I'm sure the dimmers will come in handy when we watch movies or have a live band in the room some day!  Also, Pastor Tom had the genius idea of moving the projector to face the east wall.  This way, the projector screen will be viewable from anywhere in the room and the room will be more "theater-like."  More people will also be able to comfortably see the screen and teacher during a lesson.  Why didn't I think of that?!  Thanks, Pastor!

Here are some pictures of what's going on in the room today...

Goodbye tiles!

Over the past week, we removed most of the ceiling tiles.  The room sure got dusty!  The remaining gridwork will be painted black in a few weeks.  Then later in February, new colored tiles will be installed in a few areas in the room.  We are trying to keep this project as "green" as possible; so we kept most of the old tiles in case the church needs them to replace other tiles.  We also plan on storing the current lights down in the basement, and they could be used to replace other lights around the building.  Things are moving along!  Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped remove the ceiling tiles!

Empty Room

Last night, before some very helpful youth and adults moved furniture, we prayed that this renovation project glorify the Lord.  The room isn't ours, it's the Lord's.  Just like this church and this world is the Lord's.  Even us... sinful human beings... are not our own.  We were bought at a price (1 Cor. 6:19-20).  May we honor God wherever we go and whatever we do!

The renovation kicked off with couches, chairs, tables, games, and Bibles being moved to the temporary Sr. FLY Room (204a).  Room 204 is now divided in half, with the Sr. FLY in 204a and the Jr. FLY in 204b.  Volume levels will be higher in that wing of the church on Sunday mornings... but it's all good!

Room 201 looks pretty empty right now, but that will all change once the ceiling tiles start dropping... hopefully not on their own!

Please pray for the safety of everyone who will be working in the room in these coming weeks.  Also pray that we as a body of believers continue to glorify the Lord in this new year!

A New & Refreshed Look!

Exposed ceiling, new lights, new sound panels, & painted walls!
This past year, an anonymous donor graciously donated money to renovate the Sr. FLY Room!  Over the past 10 months, many youth advisors and Property Board members met with contractors and interior designers to redesign the room.  We bounced ideas and color schemes off of many youth this past spring and summer.  Thanks for your help!  The main goal is to make it an “attractive, welcoming, and safe place for youth.”  The room is an investment in today’s youth and tomorrow’s youth.

The Church Council approved the renovation plan and work will begin the first week of January!

Pictures & video of the room will be posted on this blog throughout the renovation!

Here’s where you come in…

-There will be a “Move-Out” event on Friday, Jan. 4 @ 7pm.  Help move furniture from the Sr. FLY Room into the Jr. FLY Room (Room 204).  There will be lots of pizza, soda, and possibly a Dodgepin game!
-Later in February, you’ll have an opportunity to paint new ceiling tiles and move the furniture back into the room.  More details will come later…
*Beginning Jan. 6, the Sunday morning Sr. FLY class will meet in Room 204a and Sunday Night FLY will meet in the Auditorium until the project is completed in February.
